Title: Exploring the Intersection: Lived Experience of LGBTQ+ Individuals with Dementia

Oral Presentation

Abstract

As our understanding of dementia evolves, it becomes increasingly evident that the experience of this condition is deeply nuanced, shaped by diverse identities and life experiences. Within the LGBTQ+ community, individuals facing dementia encounter unique challenges and complexities that intersect with their sexual orientation, gender identity, and lived experiences. This presentation delves into the intricate interplay between LGBTQ+ identity and dementia, shedding light on the lived experiences of this marginalised population.

Drawing from qualitative research and personal narratives, this presentation provides a comprehensive exploration of the multifaceted journey of LGBTQ+ individuals living with dementia. It examines the impact of societal stigma, discrimination, and historical trauma on their access to care, support networks, and quality of life. Moreover, it delves into the ways in which dementia may intersect with issues of identity, self-expression, and autonomy within the LGBTQ+ community.

Key themes explored include the challenges of disclosure and identity affirmation in dementia care settings, the importance of culturally competent care and support services, and the resilience and agency demonstrated by LGBTQ+ individuals in navigating dementia-related transitions. Through a lens of intersectionality, this presentation highlights the diversity of experiences within the LGBTQ+ dementia community, recognising the intersections of race, ethnicity, class, and other social factors.

Furthermore, this presentation underscores the urgent need for inclusive policies, training programs, and advocacy efforts to address the unique needs of LGBTQ+ individuals living with dementia. By amplifying their voices and centring their experiences, we can foster a more compassionate, equitable approach to dementia care that honours the dignity, autonomy, and humanity of all individuals, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.

In conclusion, this presentation invites attendees to engage in critical dialogue, reflection, and action to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for LGBTQ+ individuals navigating the complex terrain of dementia.

Biography

I am a Dementia Studies PhD researcher at the University of Stirling who has 10 years of relevant experience working in the Social Care sector as a Senior Supervisor and Senior Care Assistant in both residential and nursing settings. I have relevant practice experience in providing person-centred care, shift management, care planning, risk assessing, and liaising with key stakeholders that has shaped my research.

My key interest is the LGBTQ+ Dementia Community and my PhD will explore 'what it means to be a queer man with dementia' and use an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis approach to answer the question.

Due to my interest, I have also become a member of the LGBTQ+ Dementia Advisory Group Community Interest Company which aims to give this cohort of people a voice and help make a positive change in health and social care.
